Stars of "Little Couple" Lament the Loss of Child

Dr. Jennifer Arnold and her husband Bill Klein, who are the stars of the TLC show "The Little Couple," got good news when they found that the embryo implanted into the uterus of their surrogate took. But that joy turned to sorrow when they later found that the surrogate had miscarried. Both Arnold and Klein have skeletal dysplasia, a disorder related to the growth of bones that causes dwarfish. The couple’s tribulations as they have tried to become parents has been highlighted on the show, and they decided to use a surrogate because of the potential health problems a pregnancy could cause.

The show’s season finale showed that their surrogate was pregnant, with Klein noting, "After we got pregnant, the craziness ensued with us wondering what to do with the baby's room, making sure our surrogate was getting her daily dose of baby vitamins." Klein found out the bad news after the season of the show was over, and had to call his wife at work in order to deliver the bad news.

Notes Klein, "I didn't want her to be the last person to find out. Ugly or happy, it needs to be told. It was a very tough day, and Jen took it harder than she originally expected." Arnold confirmed that, telling a PEOPLE magazine interviewer, "I cried my eyes out. I deal with families who lose their babies and I will cry with them, but I thought I would be stronger. Nothing can completely prepare for all that when it is about you."
