New Dancing with the Stars Cast Revealed

Dancing with the Stars has the luxury of hand-picking it's celebrity and near-celebrity contestants for every season, and with 12 seasons already under its belt, DWTS knows what it's doing. The show has mastered the art of sprinkling in just enough eye candy, just enough train wreck, just enough controversy and just enough nearly-legitimate celebrity, to appeal to a wide swath of the American viewing public.

This year's cast is certainly no exception and may be one of the more exaggerated groups of contestants that DWTS has managed to produce. Chaz Bono and Nancy Grace are probably the two most provocative contestants - and both are sure to draw fire and scrutiny from the far right and far left among the viewing public. Kristin Cavallari fills the eye candy role vacated by last season's surprise contender, Audrina Patridge. Ron Artest of the Los Angeles Lakers is there representing professional athletes and David Arquette assumes the David Hasselhoff role as the contestant who most closely resembles a legitimate Hollywood celebrity.

Of course, Arquette's appearance on the show may be the most interesting of all, given his ongoing struggles with addiction and his deteriorating marriage to Courtney Cox. Given Cox's still-secure A-list status, it's hard to imagine that Arquette feels like a stint on DWTS is going to offer him any sort of career boost. Assuming that he is still sober, it's a puzzling choice.

But once the dancing and the judging start, celebrity status really just fades away. That's really the brilliance of the show. Viewers get to see the "celebrities" simply as contestants who are trying to compete in a skill that is foreign to many of them.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Say Most Recent Album Not a Comeback

It’s been a long time since the Red Hot Chili Peppers have released an album, so one could be forgiven for calling their latest release, "I’m With You," a comeback of sorts. It is, after all, the first album that they’ve released since guitarist John Frusciante left the band. But Rolling Stone’s David Fricke had the gall to call the album a comeback effort and it did not site too well with Anthony Kiedis, the band’s lead singer, or the rest of the band. Noted Keidis, "What did we come back from? Malaria?"

Keidis added, "Maybe in the traditional sense of the word, like ‘coming back’ from our break. But ‘comeback,’ ‘reunion,’ I don’t know. We took a moment to reflect and consider the possibilities, and we’re really fortunate Josh was available and wanting to join forces with us. We didn’t really ever lose full momentum, so it wasn’t like we disbanded and re-banded, we just got kind of flotatious and then reformed together in a new configuration. ‘Comeback’ sounds like you quit and then started again, we didn’t quite quit."

Keidis seems to be talking circles around the issue. Flotatious? Really? Either way, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are back…er, here again? Whatever they are, there’s a new album, and for fans of the band, which reached the peak of its popularity in the 1990s, it’s a good thing. New guitarist Josh Kinghoffer, to whom Keidis referred in his comments, noted, "It’s the first time the band took more than a couple of months off probably in the last 10 years." So there you have it…it’s not a comeback. It’s just a new album.

Famous Celebrity Deaths

Hollywood has had its fair share of dramatic instances where tragic death seems to be a normal occurrence and not so much otherwise. In recent weeks, the death of Amy Winehouse caused quite a stir among the music and film industry, with people not surprised about how and why it happened. I for one presumed that it had something to do with either drugs or alcohol, and not a common case like an accident. There are deaths in the fraternity that have famous actors and actresses usually being victims of drug abuse and a life that drives them to take the worst of decisions to end their lives, which we cannot speculate given the haziness of the situation.

Famous Celebrity Deaths Revealed

It is upsetting to turn on the television set or tune into the radio only to hear about yet another celebrity death. Some of us have now accepted the fact that tragedy is Hollywood's way of bidding their best actors and actresses goodbye. The lucky few that died normal deaths didn't stir up such controversy or have something dark going on in their lives to leave us all mouth gaping at their untimely deaths. Let's now explore the different deaths that have occurred in the past years of the rich and famous.

Amy Winehouse 1983-2011 (Singer)
Amy Winehouse, was only 27 when she was found dead in her apartment in London on 23rd July, 2011. She was a talented singer with a voice that was musically acclaimed for its edginess and fresh sound. Her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, reported that she once went into a fit (in a past incident) and stopped breathing post black out, where he gave her mouth to mouth resuscitation to help revive her. Winehouse's autopsy didn't conclude anything concrete, where the evidence that it may have been drugs has not been brought to light.
Ryan Dunn 1977-2011 ('Jackass' Madcap)
The death of Ryan Dunn, star of the hit movie series 'Jackass' was something the cast wasn't prepared for. The blow intensity was felt more by Johnny Knoxville, boss of the 'Jackass' movie runs. Ryan was suspected of drunk driving, while being one of two passengers in the car wreck that killed both present, as the car swerved off the road and burst into flames thereafter. The incident has been termed as an 'auto accident' and not a 'DUI' scenario.
Brittany Murphy 1977-2009 (Actress/Singer)
The death of Brittany Murphy was one of those unexpected tragedies that you wouldn't ever see coming, where although not highly acclaimed as an actress, she did do her bit to squeeze herself into the limelight every now and then. The 'Girl Interrupted' star was known for her quirky acting when it came to comedy and romance like 'Just Married' where she starred opposite funny man Ashton Kutcher. Reportedly, Murphy died from a cardiac arrest while in the shower. Rumors circulated about her having an eating disorder while even dealing with drugs, where her husband Simon Monjack snuffed the bad talk saying that Hollywood was responsible for her death. By that he meant his late wife was under pressure from the film industry, where the final cause of her death was due to stress and depression.
Heath Ledger 1979-2008 (Actor)
Heath Ledger reined in the hearts of the female audiences in '10 Things I Hate About You' as the bad boy Australian who woes actress Julia Stiles as part of a bet, who later ends up falling for her. The star's death created a wave of confusion and talk - being as sudden as the death of Michael Jackson. The star's last film 'The Dark Knight' was the highlight of the actor's career, and a big push rise for his stature as an actor since 'Brokeback Mountain' where it all tragically came to an end in 2008. He was found dead in his apartment, where autopsy reports revealed that the actor had died due to an overdose on prescription pills, due to his insomnia related troubles. Whether it was deliberate or an accident hasn't been made conclusive.
Bruce Lee 1940-1973 (Actor)
Bruce Lee was said to have suffered from cerebral edema, where medical reports called it 'death by misadventure'. He died due to a brain swelling incident that led him to suffer constant headaches and blackouts. Traces of Equagesic was found in his blood stream which acted as both a relaxant and painkiller. Rumors of course followed like they seem to when someone famous dies from a death that isn't concrete in evidence, that drugs were involved as part of Bruce's death.
Elvis Presley 1935-1977 (Singer/Actor)
Elvis Presley touched the hearts of many American folk and belted out rock and roll tracks that took the nation by storm. Much-loved and highly respected for his sultry vocals and fluid dance moves, Elvis Presley was America's sweetheart where his life came abruptly to an end after saturating his system with too many drugs. His body at the time was weak, and he would force himself to perform on stage for his fans, where his death did give them solace to see his suffering end. Overdosing on the drugs led him to believe that they were helping him, and the turnout was shocking when he was found dead on his bathroom floor. He was only 42 when he was found dead.
Anna Nicole Smith 1967-2007 (Actress/Model)
Anna Nicole Smith was beautiful, talented and the center of controversy. She was immersed with problems in and around her life, and probably spiraled out of control after the death of her son. She was found in her hotel room, where she was being resuscitated but without any sign of life after several tries. The drug chloral hydrate when mixed with other prescription drugs that she was on, was a deadly mix that led to her death, where depression was a known side effect. The mystery circulating around the incident was that the drugs that were supposed to be for her husband, was found in her system leading to rumors that this may have been a suicide if not an accidental death.
Gary Coleman 1968-2010 (Actor)
Gary Coleman when seen on the infamous sitcom 'Diff'rent Strokes' could only leave a smile on my face with his adorable chubby cheeks and witty child-like humor. Starting at the young age of 8, Gary Coleman was America's favorite little kid (Arnold Jackson) who died at the age of 42 from congenital kidney disease. He will be missed by many of his fans, where 'Diff'rent Strokes' is still as big a hit as it was back in the day.
Elizabeth Taylor 1932-2011 (Actress)
Elizabeth Taylor was a profound actress who made her mark in the film industry, starting out in black and white while then moving into an era of color and style. Known for her classiness, her strong and subdued way of putting forward a character was both professional and recognized. She was most definitely an iconic actress of her time and is still very much revered even today. She'd been suffering from congestive heart failure for so long, that it finally took a toll on her and led her weak heart to finally give out. She died at age 79.
Bernie Mac 1957-2008 (Stand Up Comedian/Actor)
I'm sure a lot of us tuned in to 'The Bernie Mac Show', where Mac plays himself in a series that were loosely based on his real life. Rising slowly up the ladder of success, Bernie Mac has his way of tickling audiences' funny bone, most often recognized as a class A stand up comedian more than an actor. He suffered from complications due to pneumonia, and was hospitalized and said to be responding well to the treatment being done on him. Sadly his system couldn't take it anymore and he passed away in August 2008.
Peter Falk 1927-2011 (Actor)
Peter Falk was someone any mystery loving fanatic would adore, with his calm demeanor while addressing crimes, and his skeptical and shrewd manner in solving cases as Detective Columbo in the hit series 'Columbo'. He'd been suffering from Alzheimer's disease, battling it out for a while, before passing away this year, 2011.
Michael Jackson 1958-2009 (Singer)
Michael was able to throw a large casting net of influence over people of all ages, making it big for himself as a child when he appeared as the lead singer among his brothers in the music group 'The Jackson 5'. Fans around the world were obsessed with his drive and passion to make music that was both powerful and magnetic. The moonwalker died from a cardiac arrest during the time when he was putting together his much-anticipated concert 'This is It', where only the rehearsal footage was then made public. Fans were devastated world-wide, including members of his family and those who knew him well. He was 50 when he died on June 25th, 2009.
Steve Irwin 1962-2006 (Naturalist)
The infamous crocodile hunter was a hearty Australian that managed to make the most dangerous of situations, a fascinating one. With his eccentric ways and his obvious passion for the wild, Steve Irwin was seen as an iconic naturalist of his time. Steve Irwin was killed in a stingray attack, where his daring self may have pushed the boundaries a tad too much, sadly leading to his demise.

VMA Executives Gush Over Lady Gaga’s Performance at Awards Show

Executives for MTV’s Music Video Awards were gushing after seeing how well Lady Gaga did in her role as "Jo Calderone" at the awards show recently. They’ve said she was so in character that it’s as though Gaga wasn’t there at all – that she actually "became" Calderone for the show rather than merely playing a part. Whether you buy that or not, what is clear is that Lady Gaga has more than just pop singing chops. Turns out she can act as well. The consummate entertainer interacted with Britney Spears an wowed both the crowd and the show’s producers.

Said VMA Executive Producer Dave Sirulnick, "We had talked to her about the creative a few weeks before the show. We had a call with her, and it became clear that she’s going to be Jo. She showed up as Jo, rehearsed as Jo. If you said ‘Gaga,’ she wouldn’t respond. After rehearsals, she comes over, she says to me, ‘It’s nice to meet you,’ and I say to her, ‘I know your friend Gaga,’ and she says, ‘That Gaga, what a bitch!’ She did not break character once. She walks in backstage and, in front of a whole bunch of people, went into the men’s room."

Sirulnick went on, describing how dedicated Gaga was to continuing to play the part: "Later we had all the Young the Giant fans line dup waiting for the band to rehearse their performance, and Jo was walking out of the building to her dressing room and someone yelled ‘It’s Gaga!’ But she didn’t respond, just kept on walking, until finally someone yelled, ‘Hey, Jo!’ and then she turned and waved." After performing the character, Gaga also performed her song, "You and I," to great effect. She then came back out on state, still in character, to both pay tribute to Britney Spears and to give her a kiss.

Singers and Musicians Who Died at 27

I read this quote on some sidey post card a few years ago; and it immediately came back to me as I read about the "Curse of 27" concept. The first thought that came to my mind was that members of the 27 Club probably lived by this quote. Though the word 'miserable' kind of pokes. They didn't really lead a miserable life, not consciously or by choice at least; and yet their lives turned out to be full of pain and misery. You read about singers and musicians who died at 27 and you can't help feeling this pang in the chest. Do you feel sad or pity for them? Not exactly. Do you feel hatred? Not that either. But something just aches deep inside. These are the people who led a true rock n' roll life. Kurt Cobain is one of the later members of the club, but if the former members of the 27 club would have read his suicide note they would have probably lit up their lighters when they came to the end of it... "it's better to burn out than to fade away".

Curse of 27 - Most Iconic Members

The Curse of 27 - or the 27 Club, or the Forever 27 Club - refers to a club of persons (singers and musicians mostly, all dead) belonging to the music industry, who died at the age of 27 years. The club includes many people from the music industry - right from its alleged first member Robert Johnson (1911 - 1938) to the latest Amy Winehouse (1983 - 2011). Here is a brief account of some of its most iconic members. In the context in which this club was formed, the following members are those music-makers whose lives epitomized the rock n' roll life, who perfectly fit the image. They are the 'originals'.

~ Kurt Cobain ~ ("Come As You Are", "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "All Apologies")
Born: 20 February 1967
Died: c. 5 April 1994
Cause of Death: Suicide
Kurt Cobain is probably the best thing to have ever happened to grunge music. Lead singer and guitarist of the most popular grunge band Nirvana, Kurt went through a troubled childhood. Many believe he never really fully recovered from his parents' divorce (they divorced when he was 8 years old). Originally a very energetic, excited, happy and positive child, Kurt's life was full of angst in the later years. He was married to Courtney Love and was father of Frances Bean Cobain at the time of his death. Kurt suffered from a chronic stomach pain that was the cause of much emotional distress to him. He developed a habit for heroin after having consumed the drug for three days continuously to find that it relieved him of the stomach ache. In his suicide note, he said he didn't feel for music the way he used to before, which is held as the motive behind his suicide, apart from his health condition and his failing marriage.

~ Amy Winehouse ~ ("Rehab", "Tears Dry On Their Own", "Stronger Than Me")
Born: 14 September 1983
Died: 23 July 2011
Cause of Death: (unexplained)
Best known for her contralto voice and superb blending of music genres such as jazz, soul and R&B, Amy Winehouse is the latest member to have been included in the 27 Club. Her accomplishments include being the first British female artist to win 5 Grammys, winning the BRIT Award for Best British Female Artist (2007), winning the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song among many other. The artist is also known for her famous beehive hairstyle and her 'Cleopatra-inspired' make-up style. Amid many personal difficulties such as being a manic depressive, engaging in violence with husband Fielder-Civil, drug problems and the like, Amy managed to pave the way for unconventional female artists such as Lady Gaga. Her is a musical genius that got wasted in a life of immense emotional turmoil. Her death was mourned by many artists like U2, Nicki Minaj, Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga through the tributes they paid her.

10 Famous People Who Died While Performing

All the famous people that I am going to mention in this article have died in the most surprising and shocking way, while performing. The way in which these artists have died is very dramatic and sounds more like a movie script more than a real life story. The famous personalities I have mentioned come from different genres like actors, magicians, musicians, show anchors, singers, comedians, and wrestlers. Their death was sudden and unexpected. One of them died because of a heart attack and one accidentally ended up shooting himself. None of them in their wildest dreams would have imagined that their life would end like this.

10 Famous People Who Died While Performing

Following is a list of the 10 famous people who died while performing. The only thing common between all the personalities mentioned above is the fact that they died while doing something they loved, Performing! They have left their mark in the world history and will be immortal in millions of hearts.

STEVE IRWIN

February 22, 1962 - September 4, 2006

He became famous performing for the wildlife shows on Animal Planet. He Starred on Croc Files, New Breed Vets, and The Crocodile Hunter Dairies. He dealt with all sorts of animals and he loved doing what he did. He directed a few shows and had discovered a new species of turtle and it was named after him. He was certainly the USP of the Channel. However, the 'Crocodile Hunter' died while snorkeling for his documentary 'Ocean's Deadliest' at the Great Barrier Reef, Batt Reef, North Queensland after a Stingray Spine fatally pierced him in his chest. The invincible man was laid down! I wish he never died! Though you can relive him on Animal Planet yet!

"I have no fear of losing my life - if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it."

The team of 'The Crow' decided to shoot the scene where another character was to shoot him using dummy cartridges. But unfortunately their negligence they forgot to remove the primers from them. Lee performed his scene in which he was shot. He hit the floor and the crew applauded for his extraordinary performance; but Lee did not rise after the director said "CUT". They rushed to him and realized he was shot in reality and took him to hospital. He was declared dead after an unsuccessful six hour operation was performed to remove the bullet. His last lines were "Bang! Bang! Don't forget to send flowers!". He was asking one of the crew members if the flowers for a dead in the movie were arranged for.

"Because we do not know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. And yet everything happens only a certain number of times. And a very small number really."
WILLIAM ELLSWORTH ROBINSON

April 2, 1861- March 23, 1918
Cause of Death: Gun Shot

If you Google his name, the first thing that appears on your searched list would be 'Chung Ling Soo'. He was a famous American Magician who claimed himself to be the 'Original Chinese Conjure'. He died accidentally when he was performing a trick where his assistants who act as Boxers with two large guns shoot at William. William's trick was to stop the bullets from hitting him with his hands. Sometimes he would also act as if he has been shot, but would pop out the bullet from his mouth. This time accidentally the gun was not unloaded and it hit him straight in his chest.

His last words were, "Oh my God. Something's happened. Lower the curtain!"
TOMMY COOPER

March 19, 1921 - April 15, 1984
Cause of Death: Heart Attack

Tommy was a very popular magician and a British prop comedian. He died whilst performing an act on 'Live From Her Majesty's'. He was playing the part where he would pull out different props from his robe like it was magical. These props were actually passed on to him by his assistant. Once he was done performing, he was supposed to walk out but instead he fell on his head on the floor and everyone heard the snoring sound. They all assumed it was a joke, but when he did not wake up, that's when it was realized that he passed away after having a heart attack.

"I used to be indecisive but now I am not quite sure."
OWEN HART

Owen was a professional amateur wrestler. He has been the WWF Champion twice, WWF World Tag Team Champion (four times), won USFA Unified World Heavy Weight Championship (once), WWF King of the Ring, WWG European Championship (once). Owen died in the most tragic way while making an entry for the Intercontinental Championship in Kansas City, Missouri. This match was against the Godfather. He was making his entry with a harness and while it was lowering, the equipment malfunctioned and Owen fell from a height of 78 feet. His chest first bumped on the first rope and he then crashed on the floor. He was later taken to the hospital but was announced 'dead on arrival'. He is still remembered as the 'The Blue Blazer'.

"Nobody really knows for sure who the Blue Blazer is, but like I said in my interview, there's a little bit of the Blue Blazer in each and every one of us."
DARELL LANCE ABBOTT

August 20, 1966 - December 8, 2004
Cause of Death: Shot in the Head

Darell was a famous American guitarist who founded the heavy metal bands - Pantera and Damageplan. He was accoladed with the title "One of the most influential stylists in modern metal" and his tine was also included in the "50 Greatest Tones of All Time". His career ended with his life when a gunman 'Nathan Gale' shot Darell. He was shot thrice in his head and died immediately. Besides him the gunman killed a few others too. His motive is not clearly known but it is said that he was a paranoid schizophrenic and ended up killing Darell thinking he was trying to steal his identity.

"I was lucky enough to get to see guys like Bugs Henderson, Jimmy Wallace, all those great Texas blues players."
JON-ERIK-HEXUM

November 5, 1957 - October 18, 1984
Cause of Death: Shot

Hexum was a famous American model turned actor. He killed himself, unintentionally. He was on the set of 'Cover Up' shooting for the 7th episode for the 'Golden Opportunity' Series. He performed a shot but Hexum's director was not happy with the outcome, which made Hexum uneasy and impatient. To change his mood, he started to play around with the revolver and pointed it on his temple like a Russian Roulette game and pulled the trigger. The blanks were made out of plastic, but it can cause injuries if it is fired from a short distance, specially on a very vulnerable place. He was certainly not aware of his actions, but the paper wadding from the black struck him, right in his temple which created a trauma that damaged a part of his skull and caused a massive hemorrhage. He was under treatment for 6 days but couldn't survive any further.

"I worry about not being a great actor. I'd hate to die young and never have made Grapes of Wrath. Life goes by so fast...I just don't want to miss out on anything."
KARL WALLENDA

January 21, 1905 - March 22, 1978
Cause of Death: Multiple Injuries.

Karl Wallenda was a Daredevil. He used to perform with his family known as 'The Great Wallendas' which used to perform stunts like cycling on the wire and four-man pyramid. In 1970, Karl wire-walked across the Tallulah Gorge. The wire was very high and the distance was almost of a quarter mile and he managed it successfully. Approximately 30,000 people watching him do this. He had tried several stunts and in spite of several injuries and damage he never stopped. But unfortunately he couldn't successfully complete his final high wire-walk. Karl undertook a 10 story high wire-walk from one tower of the Condado Plaza Hotel to the other. The wire was about 121 feet high above the sidewalk. He began walking but just then wind started blowing at a speed of 32 miles per hour and made him lose his balance and pushed him off the wire. He fell on the ground and death had laid its icy hands on him.
He always said,

"Life is being on the wire; everything else is just waiting."
EDITH WEBSTER

1914 - November 22,1986
Cause of Death: Heart Attack

Edith Webster was a famous stage actress in America. In 1986, the veteran stage actress was giving her final performance in, 'The Drunkard'- an off-Broadway play. She had played that role throughout the eight years period where she played the character of an old grandmother. In her final scene she was to sing the song "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" and then just collapse on the floor. Her performance went really well and the song she sang that is said to be her best interpretation of the song. She sang the song and collapsed on the floor, the audience gave her a standing ovation but she remained motionless in her body without life. She died at the same moment when she actually died in the play because of a fatal heart attack. I guess it was God's wish to call his beloved back before she could retire as performing was the soul of her life.
VIC MORROW

February 14, 1929 - July 23, 1982
Cause of Death: Helicopter Malfunction

Vic Morrow was an American actor who was known for playing the lead role of the 'Sgt. Saunders' in the Combat series. He died while he was shooting for 'Twilight Star: The Movie'. His death is unimaginable. Morrow along with two other children was shooting a scene where they were trying to escape from a U.S Army helicopter in a Vietnamese village. The helicopter was 25 feet above them and suddenly because of a pyrotechnic explosion the helicopter fell on Morrow and the other two kids in a flash of time and they all were beheaded in the incident. A terribly tragic death.

Vic Morrow was once asked about the safety levels maintained in the explosions he films. As a reply he said,

"Because we are in a war situation, this can sometimes be dangerous work. But guys like A.D. Flowers and his technicians just take it in stride and get on with the job. In four years, we've never had a serious accident or injury working with all the explosions."

There are many other famous artists who have died while performing but I have mentioned the one's I thought were the most tragic. Other famous celebrity deaths include Roy Kinnear, Eric Morecambe, Sid James, Paul Mantz, J. I. Rodale, Arnold Soboloff, Jackie Wilson, Dick Shawn and Warne Marsh.

Eddie Murphy Considered a Front Runner to Host Oscars

When next year's Oscars take place on February 26, 2012, there is a good chance that the host for the evening will be none other than Eddie Murphy. You remember Eddie Murphy, right? Murphy, of course, was perhaps the most celebrated comedian of the 1980s and early 1990s, after soaring to fame as a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Murphy starred in such 1980s classics as Beverly Hills Copy, 48 Hours and Trading Places, along with some others that didn't quite reach "classic" status. But even as Murphy transitioned into more family-friendly roles like the Nutty Professor, Dr. Doolittle, and eventually the Shrek series, he's remained relevant because of his influence on the leading comedians of today.

From Chris Rock to Howard Stern, almost every successful comedian today will point to Eddie Murphy as one of the all-time great comedic talents. In terms of stand-up comedians, Murphy is considered by many to be the best to ever take the stage. His two feature-length stand-up films, Delirious and Raw, are still among the most popular stand-up routines of comedy fans.

The issue with Eddie Murphy is that few have seen him take the stage to perform over the last two decades. There is no doubt that Murphy has more than enough comedic talent to carry the Academy Awards. He could get by on doing voices and characters alone and have the viewing audience in stitches. But the Academy is always trying to strike that perfect balance between funny and entertaining, while still observing some sense of decorum and respect for the "craft." From that perspective, Murphy would seem to be a perfect fit. I know I'll tune in if he's the host.

Netflix Enforces Streaming Restrictions for Users

Netflix is growing up fast and is already learning some painful lessons about operating in an increasingly competitive marketplace. For years, Netflix was the only game in town in terms of mail-order DVD rental and it was the first to truly succeed with streaming content directly to its subscribers. But now that the market is flooding with competition, the costs of doing business have increased dramatically for Netflix.

As a result, the company is being much more vigilant in limiting subscriber access to only the number of streams that are allowed under the terms of their account. Until recently, users could stream multiple movies simultaneously to different devices on the same account. But now the accounts are monitored so that only a single stream can occur at any given time, unless the account terms specifically allow for more.

Netflix is still the dominant force in the content rental and streaming space, but the barriers to its dominance are low and major sharks are now in the water. Amazon recently increased its subscriber library by over 100,000 titles and pricing is getting more competitive on a daily basis. To make matters worse, a once-sweetheart deal with Starz now appears to be falling apart for Netflix. The company announced that it will not renew its Netflix contract and that it will pull out all content by February of 2012.

All of this is happening against the back-drop of a major push for Netflix to expand abroad. The company is targeting a 2012 launch for Spain and has already made significant inroads in South America. But again, there are really no barriers for the competition to follow Netflix where ever it tries to expand. These are all relatively uncharted waters for Netflix, as the company was allowed to grow and thrive under the radar for many years, until it got so big and profitable that it was able to crush brick-and-mortar goliath Blockbuster before the old chain new what hit it. That most certainly isn't going to be the case moving forward. Major players are now well aware of the opportunities in streaming content and Netflix is now just a big fish in an expansive ocean. The next year or two will be especially telling for Netflix.

Oscar Hopefuls Will Likely be Present at Toronto Film Festival

The Toronto Film Festival will see 268 feature films screened, with a strong lineup and those attending and swinging deals in the charged atmosphere in an excellent mood after Cannes and Sundance proceeded so well. A variety of big names will also be in attendance, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Madonna, U2 and Pearl Jam. With last year’s "The King’s Speech" having won at the Toronto Film Festival last year and having gone on to do well at the Oscars, the expectation is that this year’s screenings will also be a prelude to some big wins at the Academy Awards.

Noted Deadline Hollywood columnist Pete Hammond, "This year is going to be a turnaround in a very big way for Toronto in terms of getting people jazzed on movies. The enthusiasm from Canned is going to continue through." To add to the great atmosphere, red carpets will be featured for those films which feature big names, including, Clooney and Pitt as well as Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley and Jennifer Hudson.

Clooney will be in attendance for his film "The Ides of March" while Pitt’s portrayal of Billy Beane in "Moneyball" will see him at the festival. Added Hammond, "In terms of Oscar hopefuls I think it is a very good year (in Toronto) because there has been very little so far that has come out." He added that many of the directors of the films to be featured have "Academy pedigrees." With that said, industry insiders not in attendance will have their eyes on the festival to get a feel for what will be occurring later on at the Oscars.

For Back to the Future Fans, "Air McFlys" Now Available

For those who came of age in the 1980s, there are a number of iconic songs, television shows, movies and events that may meld together in your minds. A montage of sorts. But, whether you loved or hated the movie, "Back to the Future," which starred a young Michael J. Fox, is definitely part of the collective consciousness of 30-somethings and 40-somethings. Now, for those who wax nostalgic for the days of yore, the creators of that film will have a little something special for those inclined to make the purchase.

The shoes that Fox's character, Marty McFly, wore in "Back to the Future Part II" will now go into limited production and be available for sale on a limited basis. Fox appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman" last week and actually wore a pair of the limited edition shoes, previously referred to as Nike Air Mag in the film but now referred to as "Air McFlys." In total, 1,500 pairs of the shoes will be produced and auctioned on eBay. The proceeds will go to Fox's Parkinson's disease research foundation.

According to Fox, the shoes will appeal to a rather large base. Said Fox, "Its kind of cool because it brings together three populations of people with major joneses. The sneaker-heads who love sneakers, the 'Back to the Future' guys who, believe me, are out of their minds, in a good way, thank God for them. And people in the Parkinson's community." Back to the Future writer Bob Gale has been a champion of the new shoes, though that shouldn't be much of a surprise, since he turned the "Mr. Fusion" from the film into a desk lamp. For those who want a pair of the shoes...well, you'll have to have plenty of cash. With only 1,500 pairs to be created, they're sure to fetch a pretty penny.

Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel

Ghost Adventures, a paranormal, documentary-style reality television show on the Travel Channel, is hugely popular. Perhaps this is because of the history the sites they visit contain, or perhaps it is because people are sincerely interested in ghost sightings. Either way, millions of viewers tune in to watch the show every week. The ghost hunters, Zak, Nick, and Aaron, visit a new location each episode, and there’s never any telling what they’ll find there.

The Characters

The ghost hunter team of Ghost Adventures is made up of three men: Zak Bagans, Nick Groff, and Aaron Goodwin. Zak is the host of the show, with the most camera time. He is also the leader of the team. Zak is known for his extreme measures when it comes to ghost hunting. He is not afraid to yell at ghosts or provoke them into violence. These techniques have been doubted by some of his counterparts, but his antics do make good television. Nick is a co-host and co-investigator. He is usually behind the camera when the guys interview residents or owners of the various historical sites, but he does do a significant amount of the investigating. Aaron is the camera tech. He takes care of any technical issues that may arise during an investigation, and sets up the cameras in various locations to film while the team investigates. He also participates in the investigations.

The Premise

The basic idea behind Ghost Adventures is that the team is charged with finding ghosts in various, reportedly haunted locations. Their goal is not to get rid of the ghosts, but to prove that they are there. To do this, the team uses several different techniques. The first is talking and listening. The guys start talking and asking questions of the spirits that are present, and listen for any audible noises that might be caused by those spirits moving around. Sometimes, though, just listening isn’t enough, which brings on their second technique: scientific devices. During EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) sessions, the guys will usually have a recorder with them that records any voices not audible to the human ear. They also sometimes use very high-tech devices such as a thermal camera to record any changes in temperature the ghosts might cause, or what they call a "spirit box" that produces white noise, allowing the ghosts to channel that noise into words. All of this, plus what is seen on the cameras, works together to make up the proof that the audience needs to believe (or not believe) that ghosts exist.

The Appeal

Part of the appeal of the show is that the guys travel all around the world to many different locations, all rich with interesting history. The first part of each episode is usually devoted to finding out the story behind the place they are visiting and why it people believe it to be haunted. Another reason why the show is so popular is because of the explosion of ghost hunting teams across the nation. Ghost hunting has become a serious hobby for many people. This could be because they have experienced a paranormal encounter, or because they are just interested in finding ghosts. Either way, many people have taken on ghost hunting as a weekend activity. Because of this, people watch shows like Ghost Adventures to see how it’s done, get ideas for new gadgets and techniques, or just because it is fun to watch. Others might enjoy watching the show because they believe in ghosts, or because they don’t believe in ghosts and they want to try to disprove what the guys see. No matter what the reason, it seems that the Ghost Adventures audience gets bigger every week.

Disc Jockey Job Description

When Cool Herc spun his first parties in the Bronx, people knew that they were witnessing the start of something that could define generations. They were right, because DJ Cool Herc is regarded as the father of hip-hop, the one who used the turntable to accomplish impossibilities that others thought ridiculous. Now, when he started out, being a DJ wasn't really a job. There were no auditions, no schedule, no crowd control. But today, it has all fallen into place. Being a good DJ means being entrusted with a lot of power and responsibility. Abuse it once and you may never stand behind a turntable again. You won't be as constant as an RJ or as visible as a VJ, but you will sure as anything make people dance to your beats. To do that, you will need to understand a few important things that come under the disc jockey job description.

DJ Equipment

Let's start off with a list of the main things that you need to buy or rent, to become a DJ.

Turntable
The most important piece of equipment that you will need, no doubts here. What remains to be decided is the type of turntable you want. You need to choose to stick to a vinyl turntable or a CD turntable. Each has its set of pros and cons that only you can find out after trying them both on for size. Try talking to a fellow DJ to get to use his or her turntable for a party. That said, even if you have a world of advantages on a CD turntable over a vinyl, once you're a vinylophile, you will not touch CDs again.

Mixer
Same as the turntable, you cannot host a party without a mixer. You should know by now what a mixer can and can't do. If you don't, you need to figure that out now. Apart from mixing tracks to create the kind of environment you want, you can also create new tracks of your own, using fading and repetition.

Headphones
Also a very important piece of technology that you need, the headphones will help you decide the timing between tracks and other things. The better the quality, the clearer you can hear any individual track that you need to mix into or out of.

Cartridges
To find out the right kind of cartridge, you need to do quite a bit or experimenting. The two main categories of choice are between sound output quality and your ability to and liking for scratching.

What Makes a Good Disc Jockey

Here's a gist of what you need to earn and learn to become a great DJ.

Skills and Knowledge Needed
Being a DJ requires two things from your personality - the ability and ease of socializing and improvisation. In a way, being the DJ for a party is like being a clown; you need to put forth a constant environment of entertainment, regardless of the crowd or the place. You need to understand that crowds, music preferences and locations keep changing, so you need to learn the flow of the masses to adapt and play the kind of music that will have people hooked to your style all the time.

This is the kind of knowledge that you will only attain by being the most social animal that anyone has known. If your tastes match the crowd, then you'll end up having fun too! In all fields of music, the art of disc jockeying is the one that requires the most knowledge about what's going around in the circuit.

Expected Pay
Now talking about the disc jockey salary aspect, the kind of money you can expect is the same as all other professions in music; the more your popularity grows, the more you earn. On an average, a respectable DJ can earn anything from $35,000 to $55,000 in a year. The pay entirely depends on how well you publicize yourself, your total experience, who's hiring you, and your knowledge on being a DJ. Disc jockeying as a job is one tough egg to crack, so you'll have to be on guard for everything.

Future
The only way you can earn a fixed income is through radio broadcasting. Find out if any station is looking for a new DJ, and don't waste time in applying for the job. Unfortunately, it has been observed that radios are slowly falling out of listeners and the business will see a steady decline over the next few years (as concluded by the BLS). The other way would be to enter DJ battles to earn both prize money and fame, but be prepared for intense competition over there. Again, all these are pretty much one-time deals, and you'll need to be on your toes if you want to find out more of them.

Being a DJ is indeed a tough profession. If you don't love your job like it's worth your life, then I suggest you find another one. For the rest, the message is clear - there's only a point to which equipment and small-time parties can take you. There is a whole world beyond that, just waiting for you and your style, but the question remains to whether you have what it takes.

Spartacus Star Andy Whitfield Dies at Age 39

Andy Whitfield used his well-muscled physique to bring excitement to Starz Entertainment's "Spartacus" series. The actor who battled foes onscreen was also battling cancer, and on Sunday the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma he'd been battling since being diagnosed in March, 2010 took his life. While Whitfield was born in Wales, he lived in Australia and began his acting career by working in television. Among the shows he acted in early in his career were "All Saints" and "Packed to the Rafters." Whitfield also engaged in modeling.

His big break came when he was cast in the Starz series, officially dubbed "Spartacus: Blood and Sand." The highly stylized show featured Whitfield as Spartacus, a man who is at the head of a rebellion against the Roman Empire. Whitfield had been undergoing treatment in New Zealand since last March, when he was first diagnosed. A few months later, it had been announced that he was cancer-free, but a relapse later in 2010 forced him off the show that was his breakthrough.

Whitfield's wife, Vashti, issued a statement that confirmed the death of her husband, noting, "On a beautiful sunny Sydney morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his love wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18-month battle with lymphoma cancer. He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have helped carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentleman, father and husband he was."

Jane Lynch Describes Epic Career Path in "Happy Accidents"

Jane Lynch was a relative unknown just a decade ago, and she's been through some very hard times in her life. But the Glee star has many more positives to discuss than ever before, and has done so in the form of a memoir, "Happy Accidents," which was released yesterday. And though she's been acting for quite some time, it hasn't been until more recently that the world is truly taking notice. She addresses just that in an interview about the new book.

Notes Lynch, "If you were to tell me five years ago that this would have happened for me, I would have told you were lying. But it just feels so right and so wonderful. I think if that had happened for me younger, I would be so unstable in my energy, fearful that it would all be taken away." Lynch's book is based on a series of speeches that Lynch has made to gay organizations, and touches on a wide variety of issues, including growing up in a loving family and her troubles with drinking, which she quit entirely in 1991.

Notes Lynch, "I wasted a lot of time not liking what is." But she changed then when she began to look at things quite different, and notes, "I said yes to everything, even though I thought I should be over here or over there, and I ended up getting a better life than I ever imagined for myself. It looks like a series of happy accidents when it was really just me kind of saying yes and being really prepared."

Charlie Sheen Tells Matt Lauer He's "a Lot Calmer"

Charlie Sheen went off the rails and stayed there for a long time over the past couple years, but according to the actor, he's toned things down a bit and is feeling good. Sheen lost his spot on "Two and a Half Men," which was virtually unthinkable when the show was flying high, but the show's producers have gotten Ashton Kutcher to take his place and it seems the popular sit-come won't miss a beat.

Sheen spoke with Today's Matt Lauer last week and noted that there are parts of his past that "I would have amended a little bit." Despite that, Sheen insists that he's both sober and much calmer now. Asked about drinking or doing drugs, and specifically how long it has been since he's done anything of that sort, Sheen replied, "I don't really keep track of the time. It's been awhile, because I feel like, without getting into my feelings about AA and all that stuff, if you're walking around hanging on to your time, it's only a matter of time before it goes, you know?"

Lauer pushed Sheen a bit, reminding him that producers would be keenly interested in the amount of time that he's been on the wagon in order to get an idea of how trustworthy he's likely to be. Sheen has cost studios millions over the past years because of his erratic behavior that has led to cancellations and delays. Sheen told Lauer, "I guess I would just have to lead by example. Words are only worth so much. It's the actions and the behavior that matter."

How to Get Noticed by a Record Label

It is daunting, not meant for those who doubt themselves. If you thought you can sing alone in a bar, get seen by a record manager and become famous overnight, you got yourself a nice little fiction piece that can be made into a movie. But even that won't be original, there's already a million movies that go just like this one. What I'm trying to say is that the music industry is harsh; you may not find your way in and if you do, every turn you take can lead to a wrong place. Something like getting noticed by a record label is a very important job to do. It is life-changing and thus needs that much attention and grit. What I write below are just words that don't really mean much if you don't have the brain, the attitude and the personality to get big.

Getting Noticed

You will be one artist or band among thousands, and I'm just talking about your genre. If you don't want to get lost in the waves, follow these simple but grueling tasks that will require your undivided attention. Being a vocalist, all I really want to do is just sing. But singing alone in a studio is not going to get me anywhere. No matter how unlike you these tasks may seem, they are important to you and not to anyone else, so let's get to it.

Socializing
Perhaps the most important thing you need to do. Call it mingling with the right crowd or whatever, this needs to be done. Your network of people already in the music business will determine how popular you can get and therefore, temper your chances of getting noticed. What you need to do here is get some research done; follow-up on the better managers, Djs, radio and TV personalities out there. Find out what's going on in your local music scene, get to know other artists. You may hate someone else's music, but there will always be something you can learn from, whether it pertains to what you should do or shouldn't. Whatever you do, do not stagnate and stay behind. Always follow through on whatever contacts you create, without being too pushy or an egoist.

Making Your Demo Tape
Next up, is making yourself a demo tape. Keep it simple and just get two or three songs on it. What I did in this case is to get two songs - the one that the audiences liked and my band's personal favorite. The audience favorite is the one that makes the money, generally the simpler one that is easy to follow (unless you're a psychedelic band) and your favorite is the one that you really enjoy playing and therefore, perform better. That one gets the manager's attention.

When your music is concerned, this will be the first impression you put on most managers and producers out there. So be sure to make the tape of your best recording and best songs. Even if you do compromise on the output quality a little bit (budget problems or whatever), don't hold back on the style and energy.

Spreading Your Music
Your exposure to people will get them interested in your work. Take the opportunity to show it to them. Spread your tracks through radio stations or a DJ you are in good contact with. Even if five people listen to the track, one of them has to be paying attention to it. If he/she likes it, congratulations, you got yourself a radio fan! You can also try to get noticed through the Internet.

Always keep spare CDs of your demo stored just in case. Take one with you wherever you go and store the rest. You never know who you're going to meet and whether they are going to ask you for a demo tape again. My point is, why take the risk? The trick here is to get people to know your music, not your song; you don't want to be a one hit wonder now, do you?

Knowing Your Genre
This is some very serious self-discovery stuff. It's okay in the beginning if you tell people that you like to experiment and that you may use distortion but you're not really metal. But it is now time to face the music, literally. Give yourself a good listen and figure out what genre you fall under. If you think getting tagged under one specific genre will mean you getting lost in it, you would be wrong. If you think calling yourself 'alternate' just because you don't want to go mainstream is valid, there are tens of thousands of artists out there saying the same thing, which means you have just as good a chance to get lost there or 'become mainstream'. Seriously, lose the hipster attitude and decide once what kind of music you want to play. It will be the genre you will eventually stick to, like and define. Of course you have all the space in the world to experiment, but drifting to far away from one genre would only mean losing the fans you earned in the first one.

Demonstrate Your Ability to Make Profits
This is very important to the manager. Think about it, if you make music for the heck of it, you shouldn't mind staying underground. But if you want to make it big, you'll need money. Nobody is going to give you that, you need to earn it for yourself. A good manager understands the balance between art and cash flow, and if you reciprocate the same attitude, he will be impressed.

Is Media Responsible for the Increasing Crime Rate?

Contrary to the popular belief, media is not responsible for the increase in the rate of crime! There is no doubt that, media has the power to inspire, persuade, and provoke the masses, but criticizing it for the rise in crime, is a sign of ignorance. The critics who disparage the media on the basis of research conducted by a few researchers on samples, ignore the demerits of the methodology of such researchers, and highlight the excerpts which support their prejudice.

Origin of the Prejudice

Before I justify my point of view, you should understand why people have a preconceived notion that media inspires violent behavior, as it promulgates issues which depict violence. People have developed a prejudice against the media, because they believe that the crime rate has increased considerably over the past few years. A perception exists, that the rate of crime is directly proportional to the increase in the media reports pertaining to violence. Presently, almost every individual has access to the media which can give him/her information regarding the acts of violence that have impacted the society. The constant exposure to the stories of violence, might increase aggression, which will lead to violence and crimes eventually.

Moreover, commercialization has led the media to sensationalize stories, and these exaggerated stories highly influence the minds of the masses. This influence might inspire the people to imitate the protagonist in such stories irrespective of his/her acts (violent or non-violent) in the sensationalized story. In addition to this, the exposure to violent video games have found to increase the aggression in some individuals (children and youth). When an asinine psychologically disturbed individual posts a violent video on any popular website, there is a strong possibility that at least one of the viewers will be inspired by such a video, and will be tempted to imitate the act in the video, and this will lead to a crime! As media grows, the exposure to such violent stories has also increased, and it is believed, that such an exposure has inspired a number of people to act violently and commit crimes.

Why Media Should Not Be Accused?

Do you believe that the world was a non-violent place before the growth of media? If yes, let me tell you that historical evidences clearly state the brutal acts of violence by rulers who believed in imperialism! The belief that the crime rate is proportional to the exposure to violent stories is false, as the rate of crime has always been fluctuating, but the reporting of stories of violence by the media, has always been on the rise. So, it is very difficult to establish a relationship between the two. People who have propounded, that media has influenced the crime rate, are biased. I won't say that such people have an agenda to shadow the merits of media, but they tend to ignore the fact that the growth of media has led to the awareness among the people. Without the media it would never have been possible to witness and realize the atrocities faced by helpless people all over the world, we could never have taken measures to rescue the victims of violence, if we were unaware of their existence. Media does not highlight violence, it has no intention of glorifying criminals, it simply gives attention to the victims of crime.

Earlier, even if the crime rate was high, the awareness of these crimes was less. People never realized that heinous crimes take place everyday, hence they believed that the crime rate is low, but now, the awareness has increased, and as the media tells stories of violence everyday, thus people perceive that the rate of crime has increased! You should realize, that criminals are often driven by psychological factors and traumatic personal experiences, and it is unwise to say that crimes are a result of the negative influence of media. Be pragmatic, do not believe that one or two acts of insanity and violence, will have a butterfly effect!

Brad Pitt Backpedals Further On Jennifer Aniston "Dull" Comments

Brad Pitt's recent interview with "Parade" magazine has led to an uproar over what has been perceived as the famous actor dissing his former wife, Jennifer Aniston. Asked about his previous life, Pitt responded in the interview, "It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn't living an interesting life myself. I think that my marriage had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something it wasn't."

Pitt and Aniston split in 2005 and since then her quest for a new mate has been well-chronicled, while Pitt's romance with Angelina Jolie - as well as their adoption of what seems like scores of children (it's really only 6...so far) - has been equally covered by the media. But Pitt insists that he wasn't trying to intimate that Aniston was boring. While Jolie surely has a number of eccentricities that may make her seem more interesting - making out with her brother and creating paintings out of human blood come to mind - surely Aniston is interesting too.

Notes Pitt in a note to the press, "It grieves me that this was interpreted that way. Jen is an incredibly giving, loving and hilarious woman who remains my friend. It is an important relationship I value greatly. The point I was trying to make is not that Jen was dull, but that I was becoming dull to myself. And that, I was responsible for." While the benefit of the doubt is not something that celebrities often deserve, in this instance, Pitt's initial comments can only be interpreted as denigrating Aniston anyway, so currently his backpedaling doesn't so much appear to be an "oops" moment as something was actually taken out of context or misinterpreted.
