Arrested Development, a nearly forgotten but still loved television series that went off the air in 2006, announced that the cast will be returning to shoot a short fourth season, which will segue into a major motion picture. For those unfamiliar with Arrested Development, it is a television show developed by Ron Howard that starred Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia de Rossi and Will Arnett, among other names you probably know.
The cast would likely now be far too expensive for a long-running television series, but a short fourth season that helps launch a movie is probably more in line with what producers, writers and actors had in mind. In such a model, the time requirements are greatly reduced, but the potential payouts are even greater.
Arrested Development was unique when it aired because it offered voice-over narration from Ron Howard that helped to guide the action. The show often incorporated its notoriously low ratings into the show itself, a concept that had never been seen before. The quirky characters and sharp writing, all free of a live studio audience or laugh tracks, compelled the small fan base to fanatically embrace the show.
Despite its relatively short run on television, Arrested Development lives on in syndication on various channels, as well as through DVD and streaming video. It's unclear at this time whether all the major characters will be returning for the fourth season and the upcoming movie, and no dates have been set for either venture.
