Footloose to be Fun, Add Twists, Pay Homage to Original

For those growing up in the 1980s, "Footloose" was a quintessential film. With Kenny Loggins adding the title track to the movie about rebellion and dancing, and a young Kevin Bacon manning the wheel of the movie's action, it was an instant sensation. The 1984 film is now being remade to fit the modern-day audience, and at the helm will be 39-year-old filmmaker Craig Brewer, who has been involved with "Hustle & Flow" and "Black Snake Moan."

As one who grew up in the era of parachute pants and Michael Jackson's "Thriller," Brewer was happy, to say the least, to get the opportunity to work on the new film. Says Brewer, "When I was 13, I was blaring the soundtrack on my Walkman constantly. It was in my ears all the time." At the time it was released, no one really expected Footloose to do much. It had a budget of just over $8 million, after all. But it was released at a time when MTV was starting to truly catch on, and the dancing- and music-inspired film was destined for greatness, having totaled about $80 million at the box office.

Prior to beginning work on the new film, Brewer sat down with Dean Pitchford, who wrote both the lyrics to the title track done by Loggins and the screenplay. Noted Pitchford of his meeting, "Craig knows this movie better than I do. It was strange to sit there and hear him repeat dialog to me. As a teen, he memorized my movie." Indeed, Brewer is likely not the only late 30-something that has the movie memorized, and it's just that nostalgia that will probably make the new version of the film appeal to both younger audiences (thanks to the updated cast) and older alike.
